Sunderland Coastal Guide

Situated at the mouth of the River Wear, Sunderland is a city boasting a rich industrial heritage tracing back to Anglo Saxon times. From being a major shipbuilding hub with over 65 shipyards during the 19th century to a key exporter of coal worldwide, Sunderland’s fascinating history also includes a strong tradition in glass making. This captivating past is outlined in a dedicated visitor centre.

Founded in 674, a Benedictine abbey was once the place of study for the Venerable Bede. Although it was later destroyed by Vikings, its remains were incorporated into the Church of St. Peter that stands today.

Sunderland Today

The city continues to operate as a significant port, handling imports and exports of goods and bulk cargos around the globe. Its proud port history, dating back to Roman times when a principal trade was in salt, experienced prosperity in the 18th century when its main cargo was coal. The port is now owned by the city council, who plan to develop it further.

Modern Sunderland, with a population of approximately 300,000, is a bustling commercial centre with a diverse economy. The last shipyard closed in 1988, prompting the City Council to attract other businesses to the area. Their efforts bore fruit when Nissan set up a major plant nearby, drawing many other suppliers. Sunderland was granted city status in 1992.
