Discover St Andrews: The Epitome of History, Golf, and Coastal Beauty

St Andrews, a delightful coastal town, is celebrated for its rich golfing heritage and internationally recognised University. Known as the meeting place of Prince William and Kate Middleton during their university years, St Andrews continues to captivate visitors with its charm and historical significance.

The Birthplace of Golf

St Andrews is synonymous with golf. The world's oldest golf club, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, was established here in 1754. This prestigious institution sets the rules and regulations for golf games and competitions globally, contributing significantly to the sport's development and popularity.

A Leading Centre for Arts and Humanities

The University of St Andrews, founded around 1410, is the third oldest in the English-speaking world. With approximately 8,500 students enrolled from diverse backgrounds, including royalty and nobility, the University is highly ranked for its arts and humanities programs.

A Glimpse into the Past: St Andrews' Historical Ruins

St Andrews is home to significant historical ruins that paint a story of its vibrant past. The St Andrews Cathedral, founded in 1158, once stood as an impressive structure as indicated by the remaining 33-meter-high east tower. Its downfall was brought about by various events including a fire and the collapse of the central towers in the late 16th century.

Overlooking the sea to the north of the town are the ruins of St Andrews Castle. Dating back to the late 12th century, it was the residence of the local bishop. The castle was captured, partially destroyed, and rebuilt by both the Scots and the English during the power struggles in the 12th and 13th centuries. The castle fell into disuse after the bishop's position was abolished by William of Orange in the mid-17th century.

The Splendid Fife Coastline

The coastal scenery along the Fife coast is spectacular, featuring beautiful beaches and breathtaking views stretching up to Arbroath in the north.
