Portsmouth & Southsea Travel Guide

Portsmouth, a city with a rich naval history, is located on the Portsea Island peninsula. The site of the first dockyard established by Henry VII, Portsmouth has been the home of the Royal Navy for centuries. Its strategic location and naturally defensible harbour made it a prime choice for not only the Romans and Saxons but also for King Henry VIII who significantly expanded the naval fleet during his reign.

This city was the birthplace of many great navy ships, including the Mary Rose and HMS Victory, which commanded by Nelson during the Battle of Trafalgar. Today, HMS Victory is one of the country's top heritage attractions, drawing over 350,000 visitors annually to the Portsmouth Naval Base.

During World War II, Portsmouth was heavily bombed, leading to significant rebuilding in the post-war period. The waterfront area, with its rich history and numerous attractions, is a particular draw for tourists. One of the modern landmarks in Portsmouth is the Spinnaker Tower, a 170-meter high tower shaped like a sail, offering one of the highest viewing platforms in the UK.

Portsmouth also serves as a major ferry port, with services to France, Spain, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Wight.

Southsea

Southsea forms the traditional seaside resort part of Portsmouth, boasting a four-mile-long promenade and plenty of beach space. With leading attractions, plenty of opportunities for relaxation on the beach, and two piers offering entertainment and sea views, Southsea offers a classic British seaside experience.
