Nestled against the backdrop of Snowdon's slopes and the Glaslyn estuary, Porthmadog offers an idyllic holiday destination. This town serves as a popular resort for visitors looking to explore the coast, the mountains, or the unique attractions of Portmeirion, which has been dubbed 'the world's most beautiful purpose-built resort.'
This area is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. From the Snowdonia National Park's excellent hill walking to a range of activities like cycling, climbing, pony trekking, surfing, water skiing, canoeing, quad biking, clay pigeon shooting, and abseiling, there is something for everyone. West of Porthmadog, the Lleyn Peninsula also offers a wealth of outdoor pursuits.
The coast around the resort of Pwllheli is dotted with stunning beaches, popular among sailing enthusiasts thanks to its large marina and small harbour. The two main family-friendly sandy beaches, South Beach and Abererch Beach, span a combined seven miles, ensuring they never feel too crowded.
Just two miles from Porthmadog, Portmeirion is a must-visit. Architect Clough Williams-Ellis started building this unique village in 1926, inspired by the Italian village of Portofino. The gardens are home to exotic plants, and the village features an Italian campanile, a castle, and a lighthouse. The hotel at the heart of the village life is available for weekly rent, as are many of the other buildings. Fans of the 1970's cult TV series 'The Prisoner' may recognize Portmeirion as its filming location.
Close to Porthmadog, the small town of Harlech is renowned for its imposing castle. Completed in 1290 as part of Edward I's defensive system, Harlech Castle has a rich history. Though it was initially built on a sea cliff, it now stands half a mile from the sea. This Lancastrian stronghold during the War of the Roses and a Royalist stronghold during the Civil War was intended to be demolished after Cromwell's men took it, but the order was never executed.
