Nestled in the heart of South Cornwall, approximately three miles from St Austell, lies the quaint fishing village and resort of Mevagissey. This charming locale is characterised by its cob and slate cottages that line the labyrinthine streets leading to the town's focal point - the dual harbours.
Since the 15th century, Mevagissey has been a bustling pilchard fishing port. Its harbour, extended in the 19th century, has weathered the test of time and the elements, having been reconstructed multiple times. Today, local fishermen continue to ply their trade in Mevagissey Bay, and a thriving sports fishing business offers visitors the chance to fish for mackerel and sharks in deeper waters.
Within Mevagissey, you will find a selection of bistros, cafes and traditional pubs, alongside art and craft galleries that add charm to the winding, narrow streets. The town also houses a renowned model railway museum and a small aquarium located on the quayside.
The South West Coast Path runs along the cliffs surrounding Mevagissey, leading south to Dodman Point. Here, you can enjoy spectacular views from 400-foot high cliffs overlooking Veryan Bay and the coast leading to Falmouth.
South of Mevagissey is the tiny village of Gorran Haven, a haven for boats and home to a family-friendly beach directly in front of the village. Further south, you will discover Caerhays Castle, beach, and gardens. The sandy Porthluney Cove, a beach cafe and stunning gardens are all worth a visit, with ample parking available.
