Discover the picturesque beauty of Lyme Regis and Charmouth, two charming towns overlooking Lyme Bay that are frequented by visitors year-round. These towns are easily accessible via the A35 Honiton to Dorchester road.
Lyme Regis, a quaint town with a population of around 4000, is nestled on the border between Devon and Dorset, encapsulating the best of both counties - the vibrant energy of Devon and the serene tranquillity of rural Dorset. The town's seafront area is dominated by the famous Cobb, a defensive wall that protects the small harbour and adds a distinct charm to the town. The beach area is expansive, providing plenty of space for everyone, though it's primarily pebbly with a small sandy area near the town. The town prides itself in its variety of shops, pubs, and cafes that cater to visitors' diverse tastes.

The beach gives access to limestone cliffs, another source of Lyme Regis's fame. These cliffs are renowned for housing many fossils, including some of the largest dinosaur fossils found in Britain. This area is part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage site, designated by UNESCO. While it's relatively easy to find common fossils, it's crucial to heed all warning signs as the cliffs are constantly crumbling. Please follow guidelines posted on the beach regarding fossil hunting.
More information about the fossils found in the area, and Mary Anning, who discovered them in the early 1800s, can be found at the nearby Philpot Museum. Dinosaurland offers more displays of prehistoric visitors to the area.
Nestled between the sandstone cliffs of the Jurassic Coast, Charmouth is another popular spot for visitors who are intrigued by the beach and the adjacent cliffs, a source of fossils. Similar to Lyme Regis, it's fairly easy to find common fossils here, but do adhere to the local code of practice for your safety and to preserve the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage site.
The visitor centre at the beach provides information on fossils and the Jurassic period of history. It also arranges walks with wardens who can provide more information about the area.
