Liverpool Coastal City Guide

Located on the opposite side of the River Mersey to Birkenhead, Liverpool is a city rich in cultural and maritime history. Known for its iconic docks, vibrant citizens, and as the birthplace of The Beatles, Liverpool has much to offer visitors.

Historical Significance

During the mid-nineteenth century, Liverpool was one of the busiest ports globally, with an estimated nine million people embarking on ships for the new world. However, its fortunes declined as the great liners moved to other ports and cargoes switched to containers from the bulk carriers.

Despite past challenges, Liverpool has experienced a resurgence and was named European City of Culture in 2008. Today, it is a prosperous commercial and cultural centre. While signs of past decline may still be visible, there are now clear indications of city-wide renovation and growth.
