Dundee's maritime history is showcased through two of the world's most renowned wooden ships, permanently anchored on Dundee's waterfront along the River Tay. Embark on Captain Scott's journey to Antarctica aboard the RRS Discovery, learn about the polar wind chill through guided tours, and visit the café and gift shop afterwards. The HM Frigate Unicorn, the oldest British-constructed ship still afloat, is docked at Victoria Dock. This 46-gun warship is one of the most authentic and atmospheric in the world.
A little further along the coast, you'll find Broughty Ferry, a seaside resort established during the Victorian era. Once the home of affluent textile barons, it was considered one of the wealthiest places in Britain. These days it's a laid-back resort with stunning views of the Tay estuary.
Arbroath is situated approximately 17 miles north of Dundee along the A92 coast road. The town boasts a harbour and a long sandy beach, functioning as both a seaside resort and a fishing port. Visitors are drawn to the famous Arbroath Abbey and Kerr's Miniature Railway, which has been running since 1935. Arbroath is most famous for the Arbroath Smokie - a smoked haddock delicacy made exclusively in the town.
The Bell Rock Lighthouse, situated 11 miles offshore from Arbroath in the North Sea, was the first creation of renowned Scottish engineer Robert Stevenson and was first lit in 1811. The lighthouse has stood for over 200 years without needing repairs to its main structure. Although initially manned by a keeper, it now functions automatically.
There are also fantastic golf resorts in the area, such as Carnoustie to the east of Dundee and St Andrews to the south.
