Bristol, often considered the gateway to the Westcountry, is a thriving city with a rich maritime history that makes it an enticing destination for visitors. Whether you're travelling from the north of the country, or even if you're from the far west and consider Bristol as part of the Midlands, the city's charm is undeniable.
Bristol's early roots lie in its role as a flourishing port. Despite being seven miles upstream from the Seven estuary, ships of the past could navigate the river, trading in cocoa, sugar, tobacco and slaves, and sending manufactured goods and cloth in return. The docks, built during this time, have now been repurposed, and as ships grew larger, maritime trade shifted to Avonmouth, turning Bristol to other trades. Today, Bristol bustles with diverse economic activity, a lively nightlife, and a plethora of clubs and bars.
