Bridport Coast Guide

About Bridport

Bridport, a delightful town located in West Dorset, is principally known for its market, situated just half a mile from the coast. The charming resort and harbour area of West Bay is part of the town of Bridport, located a mere half a mile to the south on the coast, offering a serene view of Lyme Bay.

The town's history traces back to the Elizabethan era, when it was first granted the right to hold markets. Bridport's history is entwined with Britain's maritime industries, particularly rope and cable making for the Royal Navy. Today, it melds its rural market traditions and fishing heritage with tourism, providing an enriching experience for visitors.

West Bay, with its steeply shelving beach, is a popular spot, though care should be taken when swimming as the water becomes deep within a few yards. Additionally, due to recent cliff falls along this section of the coast, it is recommended to keep clear of the cliff edge and exercise caution while walking on the beach.

Featuring in the popular ITV drama - Broadchurch, West Bay has gained considerable fame.

Seatown

Located just 3 miles to the west of West Bay, nestled between sandstone cliffs, is the quaint resort of Seatown. More a village than a town, Seatown offers a few shops and cafes, a lovely pub - The Anchor Inn, and a beautiful sandy beach with a nearby car park.

Seatown's main claim to fame is its proximity to Golden Cap, the highest point on the south coast that stands 618 feet above the beach. A well-marked path (currently diverted, follow signs) leads up to the top of the renowned sandstone cliff. The spectacular views from the top are well worth the climb. The coast path continues to Charmouth and Lyme Regis in the west.
