A historic maritime and industrial town, Barrow-in-Furness boasts of a stunning coastline that perfectly contrasts with the beautiful hills of the Lake District. This Victorian town, one of Britain's best-kept secrets, is known for its heritage of innovation, and is surrounded by scenic beaches and picturesque landscapes.
Barrow-in-Furness was a humble farming village until the mid-nineteenth century when the railway arrived. This sparked an era of industrialisation, turning Barrow into a significant centre for iron production. By 1870, it was home to the largest iron smelting works in the world.
In the same era, James Ramsden established The Iron Ship Building Company. By 1877, the renamed Barrow Ship Building Company built its first ship for the Royal Navy. A decade later, they built their first submarines for the Russian and Turkish navies. The yard was later acquired by the Vickers family and more recently, became part of BAE Systems.
Barrow-in-Furness is known for building Britain's first nuclear submarine 'Dreadnought', the first Polaris-armed ballistic nuclear submarine 'Resolution', and four nuclear submarines armed with Trident missiles. Currently, the yard is building the first of three Astute class submarines for the Royal Navy. For more about the submarine history of Barrow, please visit the Submarine Heritage Centre.
