While not traditionally recognized as a seaside resort, Bangor in North Wales is a historic city boasting a cathedral and a University. It serves as the primary crossing point to Anglesey, via the remarkable Menai Strait suspension bridge. This iconic bridge, constructed by Thomas Telford, was inaugurated in 1826 to streamline access between London and Holyhead.
The cityscape is dominated by the University, perched prominently on the skyline and visible from many spots in the town. Its architectural style mirrors that of the cathedral, often causing confusion for visitors. However, the actual cathedral is nestled within the town centre. It is a much older building, dating back to the 12th century, but underwent major renovations in the 19th century. Both structures contribute significantly to the charm and ambiance of Bangor.
Though Bangor cannot be classified as a traditional seaside resort, it is situated in close proximity to the major resort of Llandudno. The area is notably scenic, with the Menai Strait adorning the town's front and the Snowdonia National Park situated just a few miles to the rear. Bangor pier, stretching 450 yards into the Menai Straits, is a must-visit attraction. It offers stunning views and is a testament to the town's popularity among Victorians when it was constructed in 1896. Bangor serves as an excellent base for a touring or walking holiday.
